Plotter papers may not be very common to the average consumers out there. It is however, in extensive use by
engineers and architects in their creation of blueprints for infrastructure or engineering designs. Plotter papers
are used in conjunction with devices known as plotter machines that use them as a special kind of paper for
printing out detailed blueprints by using specialized drafting and technical drawing programs. For this reason,
plotter paper is particularly important in the engineering, architecture and design industry.
Despite digital advancements, it still remains as the best means for creating highly detailed and technical
blueprints.
Plotter papers are available in various types depending on size and texture but they all serve the same purpose
as a material for printing out graphics that are of the vector type which is derived from the plotter. The plotter
does this thru a specialized pen that’s capable of moving across the plotter paper thereby printing out the desired
output. Most kinds of plotter paper are sold on the market by rolls. The final output of the plotter machine is
done in a component known as the drum part of the plotter that basically consists of plotter paper being wrapped
around it.
There is also another variation to the typical plotter paper machine known as the flatbed plotter machine. This
plotter machine is different from its conventional counterparts. This plotter machine features a flat surface in
which the plotter paper may be placed. Instead of a pen, the flatbed plotter machine uses a plotter that utilizes
electrostatic technology that makes it possible to directly sketch on the plotter paper which has a negative
polarity by using a toner that is of the opposite polarity. It’s capable of a higher quality in terms of output and
eliminates the need for a bulky drum like component.

Plotter papers also differ in terms of usage. It is available on the market for use with both traditional pen
type plotters and inkjet printing. The most versatile of these is the one known as the bond plotter paper. This
kind of plotter paper is suitable for use with both the conventional pen plotter systems and black
and white inkjet plotting through a specialized printer making it perfect for engineers and architects who prefers
this versatility. Not every one of them can procure a plotter machine after all for their needs. The bond plotter
paper is typically sold on the market in rolls. Each of which measures approximately 50 yards or 4 57.2 meters.
There are also others being offered at various widths from the range of approximately 24 to 46 inches.
Another kind of plotter paper is the one known as the vellum type inkjet plotter paper. As the name would
suggest, its use is generally limited to inkjets only. This kind of plotter papers is suitable for printing blue
prints with excellent quality which makes it a good choice for the production of blueprints in large volumes. The
dimension for this plotter paper is typically 24 inches x 150 feet. Its plotter machine counterpart is the ones
known as the translucent plotter paper which is a lot more inexpensive compared to vellum plotter papers. Like most
plotter papers, they are still typically sold in rolls with a width of 36 inches and weighs approximately 18
pounds.
The last type of plotter paper that will be mentioned in this article is the glossy type
presentation plotter paper. It is the type that is widely used among pen type plotter machines due to it’s
capability of capturing crisp lines and generating high amounts of contrast from drawings. It’s considered the most
popular type of plotter paper in use today. This is due to its final output which is very much professional and
pleasing in quality.
